I think this is the first time in the nineteen years that I have been in Deep Creek, that it hasn’t been a white Christmas. We had a fair amount of snow in October and early December and only flurries since then. But knowing Garrett County I am sure we will get our fair share soon.

Now that the new year is around the corner, I am sure many of us are making new year's resolutions. Mine is always to eat healthier and lose weight. I am hoping to achieve both these goals this year because my daughter Haley, who is a personal trainer and nutritionist, will be staying here for a while. I am hoping to get her to start some healthy retreats for a weekend and even some week-long ones. Since these will be more affordable than the usual spa retreats, I hope that we will get a lot of people interested. If you have a group of 6 or more persons interested in attending one of these, please drop us a line and we will see what we can do.

In the meantime enjoy your celebrations,

Love and blessings,
Kam

Here is a recipe for Soda Bread you might want to try over the holidays:

Irish soda bread

4 cup all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoon baking powder
1 3/4 cup buttermilk
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 lb butter
2 cup raisins or cranberry

Combine flour, salt, soda, baking powder and sugar. Cut in butter. Add raisins. Mix egg with buttermilk, and then add to dry ingredients. Mix until well blended. Flour the counter. Turn dough onto counter and shape into 2 rounds. Place each into 8 inch pie pan. Make cross on each round. Bake at 375 degrees for 40 min. Check after 30 minutes. Use a lot of flour on counter or it will be too sticky.
A friend of mine told me that if you soak the raisins in hot water for 5 minutes, before you put them in the dough, they stay plump and taste yummy.

Summer Heat Wave

Tired of hot summer days? Want to get away to the mountains where its cooler? Then maybe it’s time to visit Haley Farm B&B. You know Deep Creek Lake is where the rich used to vacation before the invention of air conditioning. The temperature is in the low 80s this weekend – I’m sure that’s cooler than where you are – and there is always a cool breeze.

The first time I visited Deep Creek Lake was in July 1993 and I was mesmerized by how beautiful it was. The lake and the mountains reminded me of Switzerland but of course on a smaller scale – the Allegheny Mountains are not that tall. Even after all these years I am still awed by the natural beauty of this area. Just a couple of weeks ago I went on a hike along the Greater Allegheny Passage. This trail is quite lovely and finding wild blackberries along the way was an added bonus. I met a group of bikers who had started their journey in Pittsburgh and were headed to Washington, DC. The trail is at nearly level grade and follows winding rivers, shaded valleys and traditional small towns. It’s definitely worth exploring.

We also recently had our annual visit by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO). They always play at the Wisp and the backdrop of the mountain is a lovely setting for their music. They ended one evening with John William’s theme from Star Wars. We walked out with the music still reverberating in our heads and were greeted by a full moon! A fitting end to a lovely evening. The PSO perform here every July – one more reason to come to Deep Creek Lake.

Another reason I love summers here is because right after the 4th of July celebrations (parades, marching bands, fireworks etc) we have the Chautauqua. Before I moved here I wouldn’t have know what that meant either. But it’s basically a living biography of a historical person. In the old days they used to hold these performances at Mountain Lake Park. But ever since I have been here (1993), it’s been held at the college under a big marquee. This year we had Jefferson Davis, Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman. In past years there have been performances by Coco Chanel, Julia Child, FDR, Frederick Douglas and many more. It’s always interesting and it’s free. In fact we have a lot of free stuff you can take advantage of in the area. There are Friday night concerts in Oakland with varied musical entertainers and Wednesday evening concerts at the Wisp – just bring a chair. There are food vendors or you can bring your own picnic.

Coming at the end of the month (July 30-31) will be the Artists Studio tour where you can go and visit local artists and see and buy unique art creations. Some of the local artists painted 20 life size wooden bears and these are scattered around the county. You can go to the Discovery center at Deep Creek Lake State park and pick up a booklet with a map showing where the bears are located. If you get a stamp from all the locations you will be eligible for a prize.

The week after (August 5-6) will be Friendsville Days. I went to this last year and the parade was really quaint and was followed by musical performances at Friendsville Park. But all summer I look forward to the county fair. It’s got something for all ages. I love looking at the animals (pigs, rabbits, horses, goats and sheep), as well as the giant zucchinis and pumpkins. I also love eating the rotary fries and funnel cakes - these foods just taste better at the fair. There are also carnival rides and tractor pulls. The fair will be held August 14-20.
And after that there is the Art and Wine Festival and the Savage Man Triathlon in September. So you can see not only do we have gorgeous surroundings, but also lots of fun activities. We hope to see you soon so that we can pamper you with our great food and hospitality.

Another thing you might want to check out is my cooking video. Just go to YouTube and search for "Cooking with Kam" or you can follow the link to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnKB1kMFaEo
I'd love to get some feedback on what you think of them.

Wishing you much joy and happiness,
Kam Gillespie

The leaves are back

I don't know if you are aware of this but Spring comes late to the Deep Creek area. The trees are nude till mid May and sometimes even later. But I'm happy to report that the leaves are back and the views are breath taking. I simply love the wild flowers and Haley Farm's meadows are covered with buttercups. Ever do that test to see if you like buttercups? I grew up in England and even though I lived in the city when I was a child, we still did this test. I'm sure it proved nothing but I wonder if anyone knew then that there would be so many alternatives to butter!

Anyway Spring is here and I love this season of renewal so much. It reminds me of the phrase "Hope springs eternal". Well for my part it could be Spring is a reminder to Hope. I know that we certainly need to be reminded of hope when so many people in the Midwest are facing disaster. My prayers go out to them.

Back here we are going to be celebrating the Highland Festival this coming Saturday (June 4). If are into Scottish dancing, bagpipes, games, food etc. you will have a ball. If you haven't booked yet and really want to experience this, I will pay for the entrance fee to the festival on Saturday if you book for two or more nights this weekend. So take advantage of this great offer, get out your Tartan or kilt (if you have one) and head out this way. The Gillespie's (my husband's family name) didn't have their own clan, but were affiliated to the McPhersons' I believe. I'll put up a picture in my next blog of the festival. Hope to see you there.

Much Love, Blessings and Hope,

Kam Gillespie

Ramp Festival

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 126px; height: 169px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aS-n4bbxNFU/TbRsJQolL2I/AAAAAAAAAFg/tM3xFDmTj0o/s320/Ramps.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599219143068168034" />
Spring brings ramps. What are ramps you may be asking? They are a cross between garlic and leeks. If you like garlic or onions, you will more than likely love them. But they are strong and I saw somewhere that some dentists wont treat patients who have just eaten ramps!

I heard about the festival last year but was unable to attend. But this year I am not only attending but am going to be entering the competition. I plan to make three dishes. Ramps grow wild around here but I've heard that in New York they are becoming a delicacy. The festival is next Saturday April 30 at 11am at the Discovery Center in Deep Creek State Park. So why not make a reservation at Haley Farm next week and try the ramps.

And if you didn't get on the guest list for the Royal Wedding, don't worry. You can come and have tea with the Queen right here at Haley Farm - Queen Elizabeth I, as portrayed by award winning actress Mary Ann Jung. That will be on May 7 - Mother's Day weekend. It promises to be a fun day. You can see details under the Retreats section of the website.

Spring Offerings

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u3u1U8lw-Ng/TaZdpLissEI/AAAAAAAAAFY/L2bdaP9zeYw/s320/DSC02420.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5595262549108764738" />
Did you ever wish that you had your own safe haven set in the rolling hills of western Maryland? Of living on a gorgeous farm minutes from Deep Creek Lake and the ski slopes. Here you can escape from the hustle and bustle of city traffic and immerse yourself in nature with clean air and pure water.

Wayne and I bought the B&B and farm over seventeen years ago. We thought it looked like a mini Switzerland with the lake and the mountains. We couldn’t believe we lived so close to the ski slopes. The air was clean and there were no traffic lights (there are a couple now). We raised our daughter here with horses, dogs and chickens and rabbits. We felt totally blessed to have had this opportunity, but seventeen years is a long time and it’s time to move on. So I have decided to sell the B&B. If owning your own B&B and farm seems like a dream come true, then please contact me at my personal email at: kamisfab@verizon.net

It’s a wonderful opportunity for a young retired couple or a family wanting to raise their kids in a safe community. It’s also an incredible place for a business looking for an affordable corporate retreat. You can be your own boss and work hard or barely at all.

I don’t know how long it will take to sell the B&B so of course we are still creating wonderful memories for guests seeking a relaxing getaway. To make it more enticing we are offering a 25% discount for guests staying in April for two or more days. So hurry on down.

Also we have a wonderful actress coming for Mothers' Day weekend (May 7). Mary Ann Jung who last year came as Julia Child will be portraying Elizabeth I. This would be an incredible Mothers Day gift for any Mother especially those who are History buffs. I have seen Mary Ann perform Amelia Earhart, Julia Child and now Elizabeth. She is so entertaining and knowledgeable that everyone gave her a standing ovation... So please join us for this special event. Its free for guests staying at the B&B that weekend.

The Highland Festival is coming up soon too (June 3-4). If you are into kilts, Highland flings, bagpipes and sheep dog herding or anything Scottish, do put this on your calendar. We actually had another Celtic group perform at the college last week. They (Iona) gave us a spectacular performance with a range of music from Brittany France, Ireland, Scotland, Appalachia and New Orleans. This coupled with a fabulous dancer made it a very memorable evening.

So if you need a respite from this crazy world, head out our way and we will spoil you with our great food and hospitality.

Till then, blessings and Joy
Kam

Holiday Greetings

December 2, 2010

I hope this letter finds you healthy and happy. I can’t believe it’s almost the end of the year. Where did the summer go? Well at least it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas here. We got snow this week and last. It’s not a lot but it does mean that the ski slopes will soon be open (they start making snow at the WISP when it gets cold enough). They do have an ice skating rink open this year and you can bring your own skates or rent some for only $10 or so.

Here at the B&B we are busy decorating the inn with garlands and mistletoe. Bobbi (our innkeeper) is busy making cookies because on December 10-11 we are hosting a cookie exchange. Do you remember what fun that was to do. You get together with your friends and everyone brings enough cookies to share and you end up with dozens of wonderful holiday cookies. We are not going to make you bake before you get here (unless you want to). Instead you can bring a beloved recipe with you and we can try to make it here. Either way its fine and while the wonderful cinnamon and spices waft over the inn, we can warm up with hot mulled cider and sing some carols. It will definitely get you in the mood. Or you could even combine this with a Girlfriends Getaway!

There is also a lot going on in the Deep Creek Lake area. If you know what Williamsburg looks like then you will appreciate what we have at the Spruce Forest Artisan Village nearby. It’s a colonial village (obviously on a smaller scale than Williamsburg). They have artisans working in the log cabins (candle makers, weavers, potters etc.) and plenty of gift ideas for the holidays. There are also carolers and cookies and storytelling. That is happening this coming weekend on December 3-4. So if you want to get into the holiday spirit without running into crowds, and pick out some unique Christmas gifts this might be just the thing for you.

Our local theatre is also holding its annual Christmas market in Oakland on December 4th. Again there will be an opportunity to buy local artisans products (pottery, crafts etc) while you are being entertained by local musicians and storytelling. And best of all both of these events are free and you might even be able to buy some unique gifts.

On Sunday December 12 -13 they are going to be celebrating the WISPs 55th birthday. If you always wanted to learn how to ski or snowboard, but didn’t think it was affordable, then this may be what you were waiting for, because there will be discounts on tickets and rentals. By the way lift tickets are always discounted on Wednesdays.

Now that black Friday and cyber Monday have come and gone, and you still haven’t found that perfect gift, then maybe we can help. A Haley Farm Gift certificate is always welcome because it doesn’t take up much space and helps create wonderful memories. To make this decision even easier, I am offering past guests a ten percent discount on gift certificates purchased this month. It’s always great to renew and recharge your batteries and get away from life’s hectic pace. You can purchase a spa treatment, or a dollar amount for the gift certificate. Whatever fits your budget and we can even mail it out for you. Mention this newsletter and you will get the discount.

I’m trying to remember to include a seasonal recipe in my newsletters, so this time I have selected a holiday favorite, Pecan pie. This is a very easy recipe and quite delicious (unfortunately laden with calories), but hey I am going to be offering nutrition retreats next year so you can take it off! And almost anything in moderation is fine. So enjoy.

Pecan pie
4 eggs
3/4 cup light brown sugar
3/4 cup light corn syrup
4 Tablespoons unsalted butter melted
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cup chopped pecans

Whisk eggs and sugar. Add remaining ingredients and stir. Pour into baked pie shell and bake at 375 degrees for 35-40 min until set. Cool before eating.

Well I hope your holiday season is filled with joy and loved ones. If it becomes too much for you and you need a break, come and see us. We’ll pamper you with our great food and hospitality. And if you are still looking for a place to ring in the New Year, we still have openings.

Much love and blessings,
Kam Gillespie

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 124px; height: 166px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sa9dhLSJ1uY/TFtK4EiF16I/AAAAAAAAAEw/K3d0EzKm2ck/s320/barn+quilt+8.10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5502073696913053602" />
I hope that you are having a wonderful summer. Don’t forget it’s a lot cooler here in the mountains than in the DC or Pittsburgh areas. They just cut the hay on the farm and there are all these beautiful bales of hay in the fields. The plums (from the fruit trees that Wayne planted sixteen years ago) are so delicious that I ate ten in one sitting. I hope those guests that were here this and the past week got a chance to sample them - we gladly share the bounty of the farm with our guests. And soon the purple plums and Asian pears will be ripe.

Another thing I love about summer are the beautiful wildflowers blooming everywhere. First it was the daisies, then flox and right now its English lace and some pretty blue flowers. I even like crown vetch - the carpet of purple flowers you on the side of highways.

I have attended so many fun events in the past few weeks. There is a ton of stuff to do in the Deep Creek Lake area in the summer. Two weeks ago I went to the Little Yough Festival held in Friendsville. There were some great live bands throughout the day and free Whitewater rafting rides courtesy of Precision Rafting. I am more of a pontoon boat person, than whitewater rapids, but this was so pleasant. It was a float boat ride which meant no more than level 2 rapids and the Yough river is incredibly beautiful. You really should try it out.

On Sunday it was the first barn quilt festival. There are now 8 barn quilts around Garrett County. These are quilt designs painted on the side of barns. They preserve the heritage of quilting and include many old time favorites. Most of the quilts were painted by Gini Neff, a talented local artist who also does incredible stained glass designs. You can get a map of the barn quilts and go and check them all out. This one was held in Accident where the corn maze is located. We were lucky with the weather too, as it was calling for rain. A minister did a dedication ceremony and then unveiled the new quilt. There was a live Dixie Jazz band (the Sugarfoot Stompers), many craft vendors and a live auction with a lady auctioneer (I had not seen a female auctioneer before). All the auction items were donated (I donated a free night at Haley Farm and a porch swing) and they raised a lot of money. I didn’t get a chance to try the corn maze that day, but I was told that every year the maze has a different pattern and is designed using GPS (everything is high tech now). Later we went to pick fresh corn from a nearby farm. Just another great day in Garrett County.

On Wednesdays the WISP is hosting free outdoor concerts. So a week ago I went with a friend to check it out. It was so pleasant sitting on the grass (we took a couple of chairs) and enjoyed the live music. They had a food stall too but you could bring your own food and wine. Just a lovely way to spend an evening – best of all its free. There are also free concerts every Friday in Oakland where the Farmers market is held. I think it’s great that so much of the entertainment in Garrett County is free, or at minimal cost.

The Theatre on The Lake produced 3 plays/musicals this summer. I have attended all three. My favorite was Brighton Beach memoirs – a touching Neil Simon play. East of Eden (a musical number about Adam and Eve) is currently playing in a charming barn in McHenry till Saturday.

Coming soon (August 7-14) is the Garrett County Fair with its carnival rides, demolition derbies, animal exhibits, tractor pulls, nightly entertainment and of course great food. Then the weekend after Labor Day is the Annual Art and Wine festival (September 10-11). This has become a major attraction with many wineries and artists participating.

Soon after that I am starting something I am calling Nutrition Bootcamp. These are two/three day workshops designed to help you detoxify your body and jump start a healthy lifestyle. I have scheduled these for September 24-26, and October 4-6, 2010. I thought that the beautiful autumn weather and colors would be a lovely setting for these workshops. I have also priced them very reasonably at only $375 per person.

Anyway hope to see you soon so you can see that I am not exaggerating when I tell you how beautiful everything is here. Bobbi and Pete (our innkeepers) can’t wait to spoil you with our great food and hospitality.

Sizzling Summer

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_sa9dhLSJ1uY/TD09CiViQEI/AAAAAAAAAEo/L0ljoaIiZsg/s320/DSC03227.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5493614234248036418" />
I hope you are having a wonderful summer. (The picture shown is from one of the lovely gardens on the garden tour held a couple of weeks ago). that I know that it’s been very hot on the east coast lately. It was hot here too, but nothing like the temperatures that the cities were experiencing. I am sure I have told you this before, but prior to air conditioning Deep Creek is where the rich would head out to for the summer. We used to have a great train schedule in those days. The train no longer runs but we still have the cooler temperatures.

Last week it got up into the eighties here but nothing like the heat and humidity of the Washington or Pittsburgh areas. So if you are tired of heat and humidity why not come and spend a few days here. We have so much going on that you can’t possibly get bored. And if you just want to chill out, the B&B and farm are perfect. It’s such a pretty drive through the mountains and you have none of the traffic jams that you see going to Ocean City or other beaches. And by the way we do have beaches at Deep Creek Lake State Park (10 minutes from B&B) and at Herrington Manor (25 minutes from B&B) and Broadford State Park (15 minutes away). So if its sand you crave, we have it.

Before I tell you what’s coming up, I just want to tell you about the 4th of July weekend. It was gorgeous and we didn’t get rained out as we often do. We took our chairs and blankets and sat on the lawn at the college enjoying a large ice cream and tapping our feet to the glorious patriotic music played by the Garrett County band. As soon as it got dark the fireworks started over the mountain. It was just a perfect day. The next day was the Chautauqua (living history is how to best describe it if you have never attended before). We have had fascinating characters portrayed every year and this was no exception. This year it was Thurgood Marshall (Supreme Court Justice) and Sacagawea (the native American woman who accompanied Lewis and Clark on their expedition). I didn’t know it was supposed to be pronounced Ska-ga-wea but apparently it is. And all this entertainment was free!

We also have many more events coming up that are free or very reasonably priced (most around $10). Throughout the summer there are free concerts at the WISP every Wednesday and the Little Yough Festival in Oakland has free concerts every Friday. This weekend we also have “Little Shop of Horrors” presented by the Theatre on the Lake (July 14-18). And the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will be performing July 16-17 as it has every year since I have been here (I can’t believe I have been here 17 years). Friday night is Broadway night which is my favorite.

Another one of my favorite things to attend is the Yougiogheny River Festival held in Friendsville (July 24). It has live music, food, and vendors.

I am going to help you stretch your money by offering you a summer special: Spend three nights or more and get the third night at half price. And you can use that money that you save to go horseback riding or play a round of golf or go out to dinner.

I am also still offering a free midweek stay for soldiers who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan (I will need proof of service). It’s my way of thanking them for their sacrifice. One of our guests called us chicken soup for the traveler, and we love that title. So please come by and let us spoil you with our great food and hospitality.

Much love and blessings,
Kam Gillespie

Happy Summer

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_sa9dhLSJ1uY/S_yaO3QlLtI/AAAAAAAAAEg/bN3jLmfYVGg/s320/Kayak+tour.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5475420827118022354" />
I hope that you are enjoying the wonderful spring flowers and looking forward to the official start of summer on Memorial Day this weekend.

I wanted to share with you some of the events that are coming up in the next few weeks. I have listed some of my favorite ones below but there are many more.

The annual Highland Festival (a celebration of everything Scottish) is coming up the week after on June 4-6 and this year my good friend Christina Harrison will be performing – she has such a beautiful voice. There is so much to see and do at these festivals: sheep dog demonstrations, Highland games, Scottish food, great singers, and dancers. I promise you will not be disappointed. It’s also a great opportunity to dress up (kilts anyone) and you could combine it with a Girlfriends Getaway. And if you book for two nights or more for that weekend I will pay for your entrance fee to the festival.

As most of you know there is so much to do in the Deep Creek Lake area in the summer months. The lake is a hub of activity (swimming, fishing, boating etc). It is such a beautiful and peaceful place to unwind. You can also take a guided river hike (very reasonable at $10 per person) or explore the Savage River on a kayak. Both of these tours are led by our friends at All Eco Earth Tours. They also lead the Bonfire Extravaganza on Wednesday evenings at the Discovery Center in Deep Creek Lake State Park.

The country gardens tour will be on June 26 this year. If any of you belong to Garden Clubs you know that this is a wonderful way to get inspired about your own garden. I’ll be out there handing out refreshments at one of the selected gardens so I hope to see you there.

Another of my favorite things in the summer is the Chautauqua. This year it will be held July 5-7. The historical figures portrayed will be Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, Landscape Architect Frederick Law Olmstead, and Shoshone Indian Sacagawea who was instrumental in the Lewis and Clark expedition. Believe it or not the Chautauqua has been held here for 15 years and it’s still free. There is usually a musical interlude before the performance. I love seeing history come alive. If you go to Chautauqua in New York you would pay a lot of money to see similar performances. Just before the Chautauqua there are the Independence Day celebrations in Accident with a parade, marching bands, food, crafts etc. In the evening you can sit under a blanket and listen to some rousing Souza music followed by fireworks on the mountain. It really reminds you of old time Americana. See if you can’t clear your calendar for that week.

If music is your passion, then you will be thrilled to attend one of the musical performances sponsored by Music at Penn Alps (in Grantsville – less than ½ hour from the B&B). These are held every Saturday evening in the summer and the cost is about $10. There are also free concerts in Oakland every Friday evening –just bring a blanket or folding chair. The local theater company is gearing up for its performances of Oklahoma and Brighton Beach this summer. On July 10-11 there is Art in the Park with artists and crafts people and of course food. I could go on and on. But you get the idea – we have lots of fun things to do that don’t cost very much.

Also Falling water (considered to be one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpieces) nestled within the wooded Bear Run Nature Reserve is only an hour from the B&B. It is designed to be in harmony with nature and is a timeless monument to organic architecture at its absolute best.

Tours are conducted daily (except Wednesdays) from mid- March to Thanksgiving weekend in November. Advance reservations are required.
Cost of the tour is $20 per person. They have other tours such as the Sunset Tour or the Brunch Tour, both of which are over $100. We can even prepare a picnic lunch for you for a lot less.

I am still offering a free midweek stay for soldiers who have recently served in Iraq or Afghanistan (I will need proof of service). It’s my way of thanking them for their sacrifice. So please let us spoil you with our great food and hospitality.

Much love and blessings,
Kam Gillespie

Julia Child, Godspell and Chinese Dance

Julia Child came today bringing her chickens and recounting her tales of Paris and her love of French food and her husband Paulski as she affectionately referred to him. We had about 20 ladies (yes they were all women) who came to watch Mary Ann Jung perform as Julia. My goodness she was just so brilliant and so knowledgeable. She researches these parts for a year or so to make sure she is totally familiar with the character. I think I speak on behalf of all the ladies who attended that a great time was had by all.

I don't know if I have mentioned this before but I met Mary Ann last year in Cumberland when she was performing Amelia Earhart, and I was so taken with her portrayal that I told her she had to come to the B&B. I am so happy that she managed to find time for us.

Mary Ann also does murder mystery weekends and has twelve other roles that she performs all over the country for the Smithsonian and for the Renaissance Festival. So I think I will get her to do a murder mystery in November and perform Elizabeth I next year. And this time all the audience can be dressed in period costumes. She promised she would teach us an Elizabethan dance at the end of the performance too. So as soon as I can firm up some dates with her I will put it on the website.

Now it may seem a little odd to juxtapose Julia Child with Godspell but on Thursday I went to Frostburg University's production of Godspell. It was a twenty first century version with a very modern set, hip hop dancing and references to Survivor, the Sopranos, Donald Trump, AIG and many other current events. I wasn't sure I would like a modern version but it really worked. I particularly liked a young lady by the name of Ines Nassara who led the ensemble in the number "Oh Bless the Lord".

See we may be out in the country here, but we get our fair share of culture and usually have to pay a lot less for the privilege. After Julia I went to Garrett College and saw a young lady by the name of Yu Wei perform some beautiful Chinese dances. I am so busy attending all these performances that I barely have time to do much else!

Anyway I am planning a lot of new activities and still keeping the ones that our guests love, like the Romantic Getaways and the Girlfriends weekend. So come and spend a few days with us and let us pamper you with our hospitality and great food.

Wishing you all much health, love and joy

Kam Gillespie

Art Workshop etc.

I just wanted to show you that it really is spring here in Garrett County. This is a view of my cherry tree in full bloom. I think spring is early this year because this time last year the forsythia hadn't even flowered. Right after that really bad winter we had a couple of weeks when the temperature shot up to the 80's and I am sure it confused all the plants. And last weekend when we had the art workshop it was threatening to snow (didn't quite make it fortunately).

By the way that art workshop was so much fun. Thank you Robert for making it so interesting. I learned a lot and hope that I will get my paints out more than once a year. This was the first art workshop we have held at the B&B and I hope to have at least a couple every year. Thank you also to all of you who attended. I thought you were a great group - fun and supportive.

And now its on to Julia Child. Julia (as portrayed by actress Mary Ann Jung) will entertain us on Saturday April 24. It promises to be a lot of fun, so if you haven't got any plans for this weekend, just head out to Haley Farm. After the session there will be Q&A (and Mary Ann has really researched the part) followed by English tea and the movie Julie and Julia.

I have some other packages I am working on too - details of which I will be putting up on the website soon. In particular I want guests to explore nearby attractions such as Falling Water and Kentuck Knob (both designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and within an hour of the B&B). We will make the reservations for you and pack you a picnic lunch and all you have to do is enjoy the ride. And if any of you are interested in riding the Allegheny Passage (this is a biking, hiking trail that runs from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, and eventually to Washington DC) then consider making Haley Farm one of your stops along the way. If you would like to spend a night or two at the B&B we could arrange to have you picked up on the route, or you could bike to us from there. In any case since it's only a maximum of 2% grade (not steep in other words). It's worth giving it a try - I am going to.

I am also working on offering Nutrition retreats at the B&B. I attended one of these retreats overseas earlier this year. It was based on Naturopathy and I found it really easy to lose weight in that controlled environment while eating healthy wholesome food, and exercising regularly. For most of us it's hard to do on our own (too many temptations and distractions). So I thought if I could offer a whole week (including room, food, exercise and lectures) at a reasonable price, that it would benefit a lot of people. I was thinking of offering the first one in September but if there are a group of you (6 or more) that want to do it sooner, I could look into it.

Anyway I will be putting more information on these soon on the website. And don't forget the Highland Festival is coming up on the first weekend in June. Wear your kilts and bonnie outfits and join in the fun.

So till next time, wishing you great joy and happiness
Kam Gillespie

Spring is really around the corner right?

March 5, 2010

I hope that you are surviving this crazy winter. Yes it was a winter wonderland, but it was also quite an effort trying to keep the parking lot clear for guests to park. I have never before seen 10ft high snow walls. We had more snow than we have ever had in the past fifteen years (that’s when we bought the B&B). Snowfall this winter totals over 260 inches, which is about 100 inches more than average. It was obviously wonderful for skiers – I think we had more snow here than at Whistler where the winter Olympics were being held! Even now there is still plenty of skiing, tubing and snowboarding to be had for those of you planning on hitting the ski slopes. The WISP even opened an ice skating rink this year.

The annual polar bear dunk was last weekend and the week before that was winterfest with gorgeous ice carvings and winter games. But quite honestly I am ready for Spring. We have so many events coming up in the Spring.

First there is an Art Workshop on April 16-18 (a wonderful way to ignite your creative energies) and then Julia Child will be paying us a visit on April 24. The award winning actress who plays Julia is so talented that I know you will love her heart-warming portrayal. This will be followed by English tea and a viewing of the movie Julia and Julie. This would be wonderful opportunity to bring your best girlfriends and make it a true getaway. Further details of both these events are on the website. We do hope you can join us for these fun weekends.

The annual Highland Festival (a celebration of everything Scottish) is always on the first weekend in June (4-6) and this year my talented friend Christina Harrison will be performing. There is so much to see and do: sheep dog demonstrations, Highland games, Scottish food, great singers, and dancers. I promise you will not be disappointed. It’s also a great opportunity to dress up and another weekend to make it a Girlfriends Getaway.

As most of you know there is so much to do in the Deep Creek Lake area in the summer months. The lake is a hub of activity (swimming, fishing, boating etc). It is such a beautiful and peaceful place to unwind, or you can just come and chill at the B&B and enjoy a soothing massage at our Spa. Bobbi (our innkeeper) is always spoiling guests with her great soups, chili, cakes and cookies. And weather permitting we will soon resume our outdoor campfires. It’s so incredible to sit under the stars and watch the heavens without the glare of city lights.

I am still offering a free midweek stay for soldiers who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan (I will need proof of service). It’s my way of thanking them for their sacrifice. One of our guests called us chicken soup for the traveler, and we love that title. So please come by and let us spoil you with our great food and hospitality.

Much love and blessings,

Kam Gillespie

Happy New Year

December 30, 2009

Dear Guests:

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for visiting Haley Farm and for voting us one of the best B&Bs in the Mid-Atlantic. I have some wonderful events planned for the coming year as well as special prices to entice you back.

Winter is in full swing here at Deep Creek. The ski slopes (twenty three trails) at the WISP are open and the state parks (New Germany, Deep Creek Lake and Herrington Manor) have beautifully groomed cross-country trails. Both are wonderful opportunities to play in the snow. There are also horse drawn carriage rides, sledding and more.

For those of you that are fans of Robert Burns (Scottish poet) there will be a Robert Burns supper on January 23. Renowned fiddle player Bonnie Rideout will provide the musical entertainment at the Will o' the Wisp Four Seasons Restaurant.

February is also jam-packed. Apart from Valentine and President’s Day there is Winterfest on February 20-21. There will be some lovely ice sculptures and winter activities around Oakland. And the weekend after that (February 27) is the annual Deep Creek dunk. This is when some courageous (or crazy) people take a dip in the frozen lake to raise money for charity.

In April award-winning Artist Robert Yonke will conduct a watercolor workshop for aspiring artists (April 16-18) and on April 24 Julia Child will thrill us with her wit and culinary expertise (Julia will be portrayed by Chautauqua artist Mary Ann Jung). For further information on these and other retreats please check out the retreats page at www.haleyfarm.com

I am also extending the stay two nights and get the third night free offer till March 2010 (excluding holidays and holiday weekends). So here is your opportunity to take a mini-vacation while getting a great rate. Most of the guests comment on how great our food is. If you would like to learn how to make some of those wonderful dishes at home, you can watch me cooking on YouTube. Just search for Cooking with Kam. And while you are on YouTube also take a look at my friend Christina Harrison’s videos – a great Scottish singer who often performs at the B&B and at the Highland Festival.

I am still offering a free two night mid-week stay for our soldiers who have served in Afghanistan or Iraq. So if you know someone who has recently served in Iraq or Afghanistan and deserves a free two night stay at the B&B please email me their particulars. I will select two soldiers every month for as long as our soldiers are there (I will need proof of their service). I hope for their sake that peace breaks out soon, but I am honored to able to show support for our brave men and women in this small way.

One of our guests described Haley Farm as "chicken soup for the traveler". We couldn't agree more. We want to be the respite from peoples’ busy lives. Here you can unwind, enjoy the beautiful scenery, and allow us to pamper you with great food and hospitality. So if you are in need of a little indulgence, why not head out our way.

Wishing you a Happy New Year and a life filled with joy, love and laughter

Kam, Bobbi and Pete

Holiday Greetings

December 2, 2009

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones and that despite the bleak economy and the war situation, you were reminded of all the great things in life to be grateful for. Don’t forget that I am still offering a free two night mid-week stay for our soldiers who have recently served in Iraq and Afghanistan. (I will need proof of service). I am delighted to be able to offer this to our men and women in the military and have been doing so for over five years. So if you know a returning veteran who needs a super getaway, please be sure to have them contact us.

It’s fast approaching that time of year when we have to buy presents for family and friends and hope that we chose wisely. I know a lot of us procrastinate about buying gifts. So this year I’m making it a little easier by offering a ten percent discount for all gift certificates purchased till the end of the year. So if you buy a $100 gift certificate you will only have to pay $90. You can buy these online by clicking on the buy gift certificate button or call us and we will mail them out in time for the holidays.

Winter is also fast approaching and that is when the Deep Creek Lake area is transformed into a winter wonderland – skiing, sledding, snowboarding and carriage rides. The ski slopes are just fifteen minutes from the B&B and they are busy making snow for their 54th anniversary at the WISP. To celebrate this they are offering $7 (yes only seven dollars) lift tickets on December 13-14, 2009. There are also discounts on ski equipment and lessons. So if skiing is something you have always wanted to try but thought it was too expensive, now might be the time to the plunge. In addition if you book a room for two nights at Haley Farm we will give you the third night free. How about that for an early Christmas present?

I think I may have mentioned this in the past, but some of the cooking videos I have been making are now up on YouTube. You can type in Cooking with Kam or follow the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnKB1kMFaEo

I really enjoyed making these videos because some of them are recipes of items we serve at the B&B, such as our signature dish the Blueberry Souffle that so many of our guests love. So if you want to learn how to make it, just watch the video and then email me with a picture of how the dish turned out, and I’ll put it on our facebook page. I am in the process of filming more shows and may eventually group them together in a DVD. I want to show everyone that you can make delicious food without a lot of time or money. My new mantra is “Life is too short to eat bad food, but it doesn’t have to cost a fortune”. Having grown up as a vegetarian for the first 25 years of my life I absolutely love vegetables, so I have converted some of my favorite recipes into vegetarian versions. So look for vegetarian hot and sour soup, Chili, and an Afghan soup called Aush and more. You will find these soon on YouTube or on Cooking with Kam.

In addition to the cooking shows I have also been busy finding attractions for you to enjoy in the future. I have Julia Child coming in April. Well at least an actress who plays Julia Child. Award winning actress Mary Ann Jung will portray Julia Child on April 24, 2010. She gives a lively talk on Julia and her two loves – French cuisine and her husband. You can later ask questions and then we will have a wonderful tea and watch the movie “Julie and Julia”. I am offering this at no cost to guests staying at the B&B that weekend.

I also have two other events planned for April 2010. One is an Art workshop (water colors) led by country and bluegrass artist Robert Yonke. It will be held April 16-18, 2010, and will only cost $345 per person (based on double occupancy). This includes two night stay at Haley Farm, the cost of the Art class, a welcoming reception on Friday, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, and lunch on Saturday (and you know we have the best food).

Lastly for those of you considering whether you are in the right job, or are reconsidering your options I have a workshop planned for April 30-May 2, 2010. This workshop called “Discover Your Passion” is led by Sharazad Arasteh, who is the founder of Career Consulting Services. She has over ten years of experience in customized career counseling. This retreat is designed for women to find a career path that honors their values, passions and life. Career counseling usually costs a lot of money, but Ms. Arasteh is offering this course for only $399 a person if you book by March 1, 2010. And if you book by January 15, 2010 and bring a friend you will get another $25 off. Registration deadline is April 1, 2010. Lodging cost at Haley Farm is extra. For further information on Ms Arasteh and her firm, please check out her website:

http://careerconsultmd.com/

Well that’s all for now, except to wish you and your loved ones a blessed holiday season and a joyous and prosperous New Year. Even two days here will make you forget the traffic and bills you left behind.

Blessings and Good wishes,

Kam Gillespie

Thriller

It was an incredible evening. We didn't care that it was cold and wet. There were some incredible zombies ready to thrill. Most of you are probably not aware of this but Michael Jackson's Thriller was performed simultaneously in 40 countries at 8.30pm (EST) on Saturday October 25, 2009. Our town, Oakland, was led by Brenda of Brenda's Dance Studio. She made her studio and staff available to the county and was an inspiring fund raiser. Each person wishing to dance had to raise a minimum of $50 to participate - all of it went to the House of Hope (a wonderful organization run by two incredible nuns). We raised over $30,000 - an enormous amount for a small town. One little girl raised over $2000 by herself. That is a picture of us presenting the check after the dance. It's not a particularly easy dance to learn but everyone rose to the occasion and some of the costumes and makeup were spectacular. I'm so glad I was a part of it. You can watch us on the YouTube link below and we may be on Oprah this Wednesday for raising the most money for a single charity. We performed at the Stables at Herrington, near the state park.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9WknyJs6zg

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons -I love the fall colors and crunching leaves beneath my feet. A great time to enjoy long walks in the state parks.

I have some great activities I am lining up for next spring (another favorite season of mine). I have Julia Child coming in April!

Award-winning actress Mary Ann Jung will cook up her unique recipe for fun in this show about Julia Child's two great loves-her husband and French cuisine. Learn how Julia changed culinary history by opening up America's kitchens and minds in the days when TV dinners reigned supreme. Discover why anyone who loves ethnic cooking and fine dining should thank this vivacious, funny innovator whose joie de vivre captured the hearts of all who saw her. Mary Ann is a recognized performer in the Chautauqua circuit.

Julia will be appearing on Saturday, April 24, 2010. This will be followed by a delicious English tea and a question and answer session. This event is free to guests staying at Haley Farm that weekend.

In addition to Julia I have organized an art workshop for April 16-17, 2010 and many other fun programs are in the pipeline. The Girlfriends Getaway is always a fantastic way to enjoy time with your best friends. And I'm still offering a free two night mid-week getaway to soldiers who have served in Afghanistan or Iraq (proof of service is required).

Check out what our guests are saying about us, and why we were awarded Best in the Mid-Atlantic. I do hope to welcome you soon to Haley Farm and treat you to our great food and hospitality.

http://www.bedandbreakfast.com/ShowReviews.aspx?inn=605013&m=1#s3626379

Kam Gillespie

This is a picture of the mist over the farm in the early morning. Its amazingly beautiful. The fall colors are just as amazing. And this weekend (October 9-11) we celebrate Autumn in all its glorious colors with parades, marching bands, crafts and more.

We also got some wonderful news this week (October 5, 2009) when Haley Farm B&B, Spa and Retreat Center was selected as Best in the Mid-Atlantic in the annual Best of BedandBreakfast.com Awards, 2009-2010. The Best of BedandBreakfast.com Awards are based upon a qualitative and quantitative review of the nearly 50,000 independent reviews submitted to BedandBreakfast.com, the leading online B&B directory.

"We're delighted that inn goers agree that Haley Farm is deserving of high praise from travelers", explained BedandBreakfast.com's Sandy Soule, one of the most highly recognized authors and a spokeswoman for the B&B industry. "Clearly, Haley Farm B&B earned its stellar reviews from inn goers for its quality accommodations, breakfasts, amenities, and wonderful hospitality and service," commented Soule.

"It's a true honor to be chosen for a Best of BedandBreakfast.com award, and we thank our guests for all the positive reviews that led to this award, said Bobbi and Pete, innkeepers at Haley Farm."It’s really gratifying that our guests took the time to share their comments about our hospitality, accommodations, breakfasts and attention to detail which set Haley Farm apart," Here's a sampling of what our guests have to say about Haley Farm.

”From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed, and were awed by the lovely setting, beautiful rooms, and great food. Bobbi and Pete really helped make our girls' weekend more memorable”

“We just came back from a great long weekend at Haley's. What a wonderful place! We fell in love with the dogs and cats and of course with Bobbi and Pete! Breakfasts (and snacks served all day!) were wonderful and Bobbi really went out of her way to prepare me my own versions of her magnificent breakfasts without milk and cheese. She also prepared special meat free dishes for some of the other guests. Thanks Bobbi and Pete!”

“This is a hidden gem in the Deep Creek area about a 10 minute drive from the lake. It is in a scenic rural farm setting and the rooms and common areas are spacious, comfortable and nicely appointed. Snacks, coffee, and cold drinks are available all day, and the sumptuous breakfast is enough to fill you until dinnertime. Most memorable of our stay is Bobbi and Pete who are outstanding innkeepers, warm and friendly and professional. We also enjoyed their dogs and cats.”

“We had a wonderful time at the Haley Farm Bed & Breakfast in Deep Creek, Maryland. Pete and Bobbi were awesome innkeepers. They were super nice and Bobbie made an exceptional breakfast every morning. We didn't even need to eat lunch after the huge breakfast we had. The house and farm is beautiful!! The room was decorated very nice and very spacious. It was also very peaceful there. We had a great time at the Haley Farm Bed and Breakfast and can't wait to go back. Thank You for a great weekend.”

For a complete list of all winners, including regional and international Best of BedandBreakfast.com Award winners, please visit www.BedandBreakfast.com and click Winners 2009-2010. So if you know someone who has recently served in Iraq or Afghanistan and deserves a free two night stay at the B&B please email me their particulars. I will select two soldiers every month for as long as our soldiers are there (I will need proof of their service). Why it’s Garrett County of course. Really I did all that last week and more. Not only that but I was also a judge at the annual Chili Fest.

This was my first time judging a chili contest and believe it or not there are a whole bunch of rules- it’s all done very professionally. I didn’t realize that chili has no beans in it. I am used to making it with a lot of beans but this was strictly meat. They had 9 entries for the green chili and 24 for the red kind. That is a lot of tasting. The winning prize was about $900 plus an entry to the World Chili Championship, so there was a lot riding on the competition. I think the chili I scored as No.2 was the winner, so my taste buds must be OK. The Chili festival is held at the WISP (where the ski slopes are) every year in August and they had musical entertainment and many vendors. The craziest part was the raw pepper eating contest. A whole bunch of people volunteered to eat raw jalapeno, habanera and serrano peppers. A few had to withdraw halfway through, but 2 eagerly munched away at the habaneras. One guy even drank from a bottle of hot sauce!

The county fair began the day after and was on for the whole week. If you have never been to a county fair, you really should try it. Ours has animals (goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, cows, horses), yummy fair food (funnel cakes and rotary fries are my favorites), carnival rides, entertainment and of course those square dancing tractors. You can spend the whole day there and not spend a whole bunch.

At the end of the week I was lucky enough to attend a night at the opera at Our Town Theatre in Oakland. We had delicious appetizers and wine and three lovely singers entertained us with a range of music.

It’s almost September and that usually marks the end of summer, but September and October are just incredible months in Deep Creek. Days are still warm, but evenings are cool and the leaves start changing soon into those glorious reds and yellows. The Art and Wine Festival is coming up on September 12, and the Iron Man Triathlon the weekend after that. So please check us out in the coming months.

Even two days here will make you forget the traffic and bills you left behind.

Wishing you much joy, love and laughter
Kam

Summer in Deep Creek Lake

August 2, 2009
Dear Friends

I do hope that you are enjoying this beautiful summer. Are you aware that Deep Creek is where people have come for ages to beat the summer heat. The mountains, the lake and state parks (translating into cooler and less humid weather) make it a truly wonderful escape.

I do so love the flowers at this time of year. Everywhere you look there are flowers blooming - from the cheerful sunflowers at the B&B to the wild daisies and blue cornflowers along the highways.

Deep Creek has always been a great place to come to unwind and relax. If you like you can spend most of your time reclining on the hammock, playing games (Kubb, Lasso Golf, Horseshoes, Bocce are all available at the B&B), getting a massage, or going for a lazy boat ride on the lake. But for those of who want to make it an adventure there is so much more. At the Adventure Sports Center (ASCI) – it’s the world’s only mountain-top whitewater rafting course - you can really get your adrenaline pumping. It’s only 25 minutes from the B&B and they also have kayaking and rock climbing.

The County Fair is coming up August 10-15. I love this event – it reminds me of old-time-Americana with its carnival rides, tractor pulls, and those yummy food stalls with funnel cakes and other such forbidden foods. And soon after that will be the Art and Wine Festival (September 11-12). Whether you are a connoisseur of wine or simply enjoy it now and then, this is a wonderful festival to enjoy great wine and art. Moreover I will give you a 10% discount if you stay at Haley Farm during the Art and Wine festival.

There really is so much to do in the Deep Creek Lake area. Yesterday I went to see a production of Huck Finn done by the Theatre on the Lake company. It was really excellent and every year this team puts on three wonderful shows. The week before that I was in Cumberland and saw a moving production of Fiddler on the Roof. There is so much talent out here and you don’t have to pay Broadway prices.

Also last week I had the privilege of seeing Mary Ann Jung portray Amelia Earhart. She did such a wonderful job that I actually felt I knew Amelia (so much more than just reading a book about the person). Mary Ann is currently appearing at the Renaissance Fair in Maryland and so you may get a chance to see her there (but alas not as Amelia). I was so impressed with Mary Ann that I have asked to her to come to the B&B next April and portray Julia Child (a part she debuted a couple of years ago). So keep an eye out for this event - and I might even team up with her and give a cooking demonstration.

But even before that I am going to be hosting some fun retreats, details of which can be found on the website http://www.haleyfarm.com/ . The Girlfriends Getaway is September 25-27, 2009 (although in reality you can do this any time - it’s just a lot more fun with a group) and the Women’s Retreat is Oct 16-18 2009. So come for either of these retreats with your best buds, sisters, mothers or daughters and have a ball.

I am still offering a free two night mid-week stay for our soldiers who have served in Afghanistan or Iraq. So if you know someone who has recently served in Iraq or Afghanistan and deserves a free two night stay at the B&B please email me their particulars. Its been jam packed starting with fireworks on the third and the fourth of July. I loved the parade in Accident and the marching bands, followed by a free concert in McHenry in the evening, and capped off by fireworks at the Wisp. A perfect 4th of July.

The next day (July 5th) was the start of Chautauqua (a sort of living history) - this has become a tradition in Garrett County and I have attended every year for the past 14 years. This year we had incredible portrayals of Woodie Guthrie, Jackie Robinson, Eleanor Roosevelt and Amy Paugh. I took a short video of the young lady (Joanna Guy)who portrayed Alice Paugh. She just graduated from Southern High School and I am sure she has a bright future ahead of her. I was just blown away by the quality of her voice as she sang from Phantom of the Opera and other Broadway tunes. The Chautauqua is a free event held every year - so hope you can join us next year.

I have also been lucky enough to attend some of the free concerts every Friday in Oakland. There was a steel band and another group who played Zydeco music. The Wisp is holding free concerts every Wednesday - another good reason to visit us this summer.

Last week I also went down the mountain coaster at the Wisp. It was fun but probably more for young kids then for people my age!. I think I prefer hiking along Swallow falls.

Last week I also went to see Fiddler on The Roof currently playing at the Cumberland theatre. It was such a beautiful production and of course I always cry when they sing Sunrise, Sunset. I highly recommend going if you can make it by July 26th.

The flowers are blooming at Haley Farm and there are so many events coming up that I hope you will find time to check us out. I think we even has some availability for our Lakeside Cottage in late August. Trip Advisor gave us a highly recommended badge.
